Happy National Deep Dish Pizza Day (not that I need any reason whatsoever to eat pizza, I thought it would be a fun fact to share).
When I heard that Chicago’s legendary pizza spot, Gino's East had vegan deep dish pizza, I hit up their south loop location to try it out. I pulled up and found street parking pretty easy and when I walked in, was immediately greeted by the longtime General Manager Mike aka "Uncle Mike".
Eating vegan at Gino's East was a whole lot easier than I thought it would be. Our server, Ashley, was so accommodating and made sure everything was vegan-friendly.
We had:
Hummus appetizer: Homemade hummus, kalamata olives, carrot sticks, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, arugula, radish, warm pita. This hummus was really good! I loved all the veggies/pita bread that came with it and enjoyed the rest at home.
Brussel sprouts: Prepared with olive oil and brown sugar, these are quite tasty. To make them vegan, be sure to order them without pancetta!
The O.M.G. Pizza: Onions, Mushrooms and Green Peppers was literally that y’all: OMGEEEE is right! Baby that golden crust, gooey vegan cheese, sauce and veggies was tantalizing. I added artichoke hearts and jalapenos.
Strawberry lemonade mocktails were yummy.
Everything was tantalizing!! I’ll definitely be back.
Thanks to “Uncle Mike”, their GM, who cracked me up as soon as I walked in and shared some dope history about the restaurant with us: Alice Mae Redmond, a black woman, created the first deep dish pizza dough and Gino’s East signature Golden Crust!
